But one of the really important roles they play is that of the literary gatekeeper, ensuring that our reading sensibilities are not too often tarnished with self-published dreck. They sift through stacks and slush piles of manuscripts and make sure that the only books that are published are the Crème de la Crème, and then they make sure to target their marketing dollars effectively so that works of real distinction rise to the top of the bestseller lists.
We should thank our lucky stars for that, eh?
So I'm pleased to report this morning that HarperCollins will bring out a new official memoir from the multi-platinum selling 16-year-old pop superstar Justin Bieber in October. The tome will tell the behind-the-scenes story of his journey to superstardom, but the really good news is that there are a lot of pictures. Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story
Update: This is starting to feel a bit like the 1920s when Joyce, Lawrence, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Faulkner were all publishing simultaneously, but now there's word that Lindsay Lohan may also be soon to release a jailhouse memoir!

Awesome, Stephen, got a finger on the pulse! Glad publishers are watching out for us.

How the heck can a 16-year-old have enough life experience to have a memoir? What a load of garbage!
This crap used to be limited to the pages of Tiger Beat, now we have to be subjected to it in bookstores, grocery stores, and discount stores.
Does anyone REALLY want to read about Lindsey Lohan and her descent into a drug and alcohol-filled world? Has she ever contributed anything to the world worth reading about?
Publishers and their bestseller list goals are all about the bottom line, not about publishing good stories people want to read.
One of the best things about my Kindle are the indie authors I've discovered through their free and low-cost books. So far, I've enjoyed every one of them.
There are a couple of best-selling authors I like, but I won't pay agency model prices for them so I get them used through Amazon for less than a dollar. I sure wish the authors would wise up and realize how the publishers are hurting their relationship with their readers.
If you're a best-selling author and read this, realize that I just ordered 4 used books that I would have purchased new before I got my Kindle. So neither you nor your publishers made any money off of me. Do you think I'm stupid or something and would pay more for an ebook than for a physical book?
Ha ha ha ha! So glad we're being saved from all the dreck.
